Using a chemical to treat water can also lead to corrosion that produces by-products that contaminate the treated water, causing significant quality and safety issues. Often operators only must establish and maintain contact time using chemicals, but must also balance chemical selection, dosing rates, and potential reactions with system materials. This often requires specialized knowledge and the ability to monitor all this in real time. However, some solutions are expensive to install and maintain, especially for small or resource-poor facilities. Hence, corrosion remains an ongoing and challenging issue when using water treatment chemicals.

By chemical type, Coagulants & Flocculants is expected to hold the largest share during the forecast period because of their role in primary and secondary water treatment processes in almost all the important sectors including municipal, industrial, and commercial applications. They are widely used due to the combination of their ability to be used in a wide variety of applications, their low cost, and their efficacy in removing suspended solids and turbidity from water and wastewater. There is value in differentiating between coagulants and flocculants. Coagulants are aluminum sulfate, ferric chloride, and polyaluminum chloride that destabilize colloidal particles in the water, and flocculants like polyacrylamides flocculate these destabilized particles into larger flocs.  These are then removed through sedimentation or filtration.
